As far as I know the pressure tanks were galvanized steel from 1960 until
they stopped the pressure system or possibly later into the pumped era. I
seem to be always hearing about the galvanized tanks rotting out on this
forum.  I'm not sure when plastic tanks started to be used in Airstreams.
Also, I bleed all of the air out of the system when I fill the tank. The
compressor has to work a bit more often when the tank is full but it shuts
off quickly as well. A round tank in a rectangular area doesn't make the
best use of available space either so I'm sure you've ended up with a larger
tank in the end.
