Patti,

I'm not sure why the guy who installed your panel would tell you to 
switch to shore power for battery charging. The common setup would leave 
the panel connected all the time. Hooking to shore power would allow 
your converter to add what extra might be needed.

No matter the source it all shows up at the batteries as 12V DC 
(actually 13.8V) The solar panels are better battery chargers because at 
the battery reaches full charge the panels will float charge where a 
converter typically will continue to push extra current.
