OK.  Further explanation may be necessary to gravitate away from the
facitious.  Many vintage Airstreams do not have an acceptable VIN number or
plate.  The DMV here in Carlsbad will not accept the Airstream plate near
the door.  The average wait to find this out is well over an hour . . . not
to mention the inconvenience of towing the unit to DMV.

AAA reps accepted the Airstream ID plate because it matched the "VIN" on the
registration papers.  DMV would not accept the non standard VIN.  Those who
choose to subject themselves to the vagaries of the California DMV offices
when a simpler path is available . . . can make that choice.
