Re: [VACList] registering an Airstream California VIN

If you can't go to the AAA [ by far the better way], California DMV will
require a "rubbing" of the VIN number.

As Bob pointed out, you cannot get a legible "rubbing" off the Airstream ID
plate.

However, there is a way to beat the system.

As follows:

Recreate the VIN number using a Dymo labeler. Then make a rubbing of this
raised number by placing a sheet of plain paper over it and rubbing with the
side of and old fashioned wood pencil.

The reason for the rubbing is because the DMV had too many ID numbers which
were misread, and hence in error. If you want to be completely honest, you
can stick the Dymo label to your Airstream and then make the rubbing. That
way you can say with a straight face that you took the number off your
trailer!

The Automobile Club's rep is trustwothy, hence the DMV will accept their
visual reading of the VIN number. However, the Auto Club will insist that
you bring the trailer to their office (parking lot) so their representative
can verify the number.

Good luck,
