[VAC] testing tanks
Local fire departments or SCUBA shops are usually good contacts for
hydrostatic testing.
With any DOT-certified tanks [e.g.SCUBA (air) tanks], VIP's (visual
inspections) are performed annually, or in the event a tank has been
completely emptied of gas, permitting moisture to enter... these tests are
usually marked with a sticker.
'Hydro's' (pressure-testing) are performed at five-year intervals, and are
stamped into the metal at the shoulder of the tank itself.
If a tank has been hydro'd, and found to be unsafe, it is 'condemned' and
cut apart.
Whatever you do, do not apply a finish to any pressurized tank which is
'baked-on'... several incidents have been reported where tanks so treated
have exploded when being filled.
If a tank has been exposed to high heat (garage fire, for example) empty it,
and have it hydro'd...
