[VAC] Re: Catalytic heaters

Vanessa, I agree with you. The trailer must have cross flowing windows open. I
also open a hatch. The catalytics don't emit CO, but do consume oxygen,
requiring good ventilation. The newer catalytics have oxygen shut down sensors.
I enjoy the fresh air while having the warmth of quiet, radiant heat, unlike the
noisy, blower type heaters which dry the air and consume more propane and
battery power. In fact I would suggest that the forced air furnaces pose as
great or greater risk to occupants in lulling them into a sense of security
which may not be founded.
Most folks use the furnaces with the windows closed. These furnaces consume
oxygen and emit CO, with the premise that the intake/exhaust pipes to the
furnaces do the job of providing/expelling same. My old one failed at this. The
new ones are supposed to do this, but what if they fail this job (that big bump
in the road that cracks the furnace pipe lose)? Your dead either way through
suffocation or CO poisoning. The problem is a leak would be very difficult to
detect, although CO detectors help. I wonder though how good these really are.
As I understand, the CO detectors lose their effectiveness over time. Sooo,
anyone else nervous about heating units?
