My '59 Trade Wind has these axle bumpers. They are attached to the axle at
the leaf spring connection with longer U bolts, if my memory serves me
correctly. If the leaf spring supports the axle, why shouldn't the axle
bumper? In the event of a blow out, it would keep the rim and eventually the
hub from coming in contact with the ground and prevent needing to replace
either. Especially good point if you are on the Capetown to Cairo caravan.
