Hi Brad:

The newer axles are the Dura-Torque type where the axle shaft itself is a
hollow structural tube with another shaft inside restrained by 4 pieces of
rubber.  The inner shaft is connected to the spindle and wheel etc.  When
the wheel goes up and down, the inner shaft flexes within the pieces of
rubber which provide the spring effect.  The solid axle that you have is a
whole 'nuther story.
