[VAC] Re: Synthetic oil change intervals?

Dan, When I wanted to extend the life of my new van (as I still do) the first
thing I went looking for was synthetics. I spoke to more than a couple of
mechanics that I trust for accurate opinions. This is what the general
consensus was.

#1. Do not use synthetics for first 20,000 miles. It was their feeling that
until everything has had a chance to seat properly standard oils changed
frequently will have less blow by. (yet the new Corvettes come from the
factory with full pans of synthetic oil......humm?) (the dealer said warranty
will stay in tact using synthetics)

#2. Synthetics last a long time yet still carry damaging contaminates. The
standard oil filters do not filter out all the contaminates.

Choice A. install some kind of super filter (These are available I do not
know any more about them) or Choice B change the synthetic and filter more
frequently. Meaning frequent oil changes at intervals that resemble the
owners manual. At which point the standard oil still has useful life and is
doing the job intended. When factoring in the $ 5-6 a qt. for synthetics at
3000- 5000 mi. intervals, with little or no more engine protection at these
intervals than standard oil gives, it was something I chose not to continue
to do. Time will tell if my choice was correct. One thing I can say for sure
if you change oil frequently you won't go wrong.
