 You are 100% correct! Patience is the key to getting something loose
without causing yourself additional problems.

The only thing I'd add is the suggestion to tap on the CAP while
applying pressure with the wrench. Not necessarily a lot of pressure,
either. I've loosened some stuff that most folks would consider 'welded
together'.

I've also broken stuff by getting in a hurry. :-(

That's how you learn the definition of "too much".
