Ken,
 Your '57 truck wasn't furnished with safety belts, telescoping steering
column, dual brake system, or many other things that we've found to be
Good Things over the last 30 years.

Although many of those rental trailers don't have brakes, that doesn't
mean that they shouldn't have or don't need them. You'll find that the
heavier units DO have brakes, often of the 'overrun' or 'surge' variety
of hydraulic brakes.
