Matt,
You're right that everything can check out at inspection time and flaws
can creep out of the woodwork once you start using the trailer. 
Ideally, you'd go camping for a week in the unit as part of the purchase
deal before buying.  Even then stuff that wasn't apparent on a week long
checkout cruise will show up - these are VINTAGE units and they will
always have glitches.  That is actually why a lot of guys (sic) want
them -- it gives them something to do and something to gripe pleasantly about.
