Ann, the clear coat must be removed prior to polishing, we've all had to 
do it.  Our trailer had no more leaks after the clear coat removal than 
before.  We sealed the wider gaps with Vulkem, applied with a syringe 
and sealed the narrow gaps and panel edges with Parbond, straight from 
the tube (tape each side of seam first).  We have not had any leaks that 
I can detect in over two years.
