Re: [VAL] Re: Towing without and Equalizing hitch

My trailer is a 26 footer that weighs in at 4700# fully loaded. My tow
vehicle is a 3/4 ton pickup. I have towed with and without an equalizing
hitch. The ride is better with it. Does it really need it? Probably not.
With this combination the various weights are well within the limits of both
the truck, hitch, and ball. Not ideal, but OK. I am unaware of any state law
requiring weight distribution equipment, BUT SOME states require anti-sway
equipment. This is not possible with a simple hitch. At the least you would
need an equalizing head with a friction bar. By the time you go to that
expense you might as well get the bars as well, since whole packages
normally cost less than the individual parts.

Make sure to load your trailer up and get tongue weight, trailer weight, and
weight on the tow vehicle's rear axle. Compare these numbers to those on the
hitch (the smaller number, not the weight distrib #), the ball and the GAWR
for the tow vehicles axle. If any number is over, or even close to the limit
you should go for the weight distrib system.
