This is not necessarily a bad thing.  It could just as well be that the 
patches were in place after some preventative maintenance.

At any rate, I'd be more comfortable with one with those "elephant ears" 
than one without.  My trailer has them, and after nearly 5 years and 20,000 
miles I haven't seen any problems.
