Ann Hope you didn't have to many things turned on. A regular extension cord will heat up some with continued use exspecially when it's pulling a lot of electricity. If you don't have a 30AMP hookup at home get a heavy duty cord. As for the humming, that sounds like a Uni-Volt converter. Soundn't be too loud but noticeable. Bobby
