What a great idea someone had, Dave.

I have a small channel mounted vertically next to the entry door that holds
a miniature mailbox.  Inside the mailbox is a pad of paper and a pencil so
others can leave us a note if we are not home -- when they ring the
electronic, wireless doorbell. ;)

The vertical extrusion in our case is the same one you would use for
mounting wall shelves.  The holder for the mailbox is one of the flat pieces
of aluminum that is normally used to hold up part of a shelf.
