You can easily check the level of the propane by using some hot water. Just pour it down the side of the tank, and then feel the tank. It will still be cool up to where the propane level is. Above that, where the air is, it will feel hot. I was taught this method back in the '60s by my father, and have never used a gauge. -Tom
