My '68 single-axle does have what appear to be stock axle bumpers or whatever 
they're called. Mine don't look like the ones in the photos - they're more like 
an elongated "S" shape. I'm sure Gerald's right that they're not particularly 
useful if you're not paying attention anyway, but I've always been sort of glad 
they're there.
