Bob,

When you take up a link on your trunnions you effectively lift the rear of the
tow vehicle by "prying" the draw bar in the receiver.  Since the tongue weight
does not disappear, it has to go somewhere, said somewhere being the front
wheels.  Imagine a wheelbarrow, with the front wheels of the tower at the
wheel position, and the trunnion springs as the "handles".
