The fabric for the bottom and back are sewn together so the bottom and back 
would be connected like a hinged door.     At an angle when made up like a 
couch and flat and level when you pull the couch bottom out.

The original couch frame is wood with wood slides to allow the couch bottom 
to pull out and back.  The wood slides or similar ones are still made or 
can be fabricated with the proper wood working tools.

The back foam is backed with a sheet of 1/4 plywood under the fabric.  At 
about 6" in from the ends of the couch there are two brass clips that look 
like picture hangers with out the teeth. __-----------__ .

On the shelf there are two spring loaded arms that clip into the couch back 
when in the upright position.

The area behind the couch back makes a nice space for canvas chairs big 
umbrellas or blankets, etc.
