[VAC] Re: Is it a 1937 Airstream Clipper?

 Hi All:

Our VAC Archive information is sketchy, but I have some
information on three 1936 Airstream trailers:

1. s/n 1224 is a 19' Clipper built in 7-36 and is
beautifully restored. Some photos of it appeared in the
Fall 1997 issue of The Vintage Advantage.

2. s/n 1226 is a 20' 10" shell with some interior parts in
need of total restoration. It, too, was built in 7-36. It
has the roll-down side windows Toby mentioned above. The
screens are stored just inside of the windows and can be
pulled up and held in place when the windows are rolled
down.

3. s/n 1228 is a 19' Clipper (no build date given) and is
the Danaher's trailer pictured in the February 1996 issue of
The Vintage Advantage.

As I recall, RJ got the photos when the 1937(?) trailer
was last offered for sale, perhaps last year. Absent a
serial number or name plate, the 1937 year is a guess on our
part. The front and rear end windows are flatter than on
the 1936 models and are hinged to open. They are closer in
overall shape to the end windows on the 1937 tandem model at
the Airstream factory.

Bill Scott thought A/S production of aluminum trailers
stopped in 1937 or thereabouts due to shortage of aluminum.
But a masonite 1939 Airstream model came up for sale last
year, suggesting factory production continued through 1939,
but the date when aluminum trailers ceased being made before
WW II remains unknown for now.

It would be interesting, and useful, to get a copy of the
certificate of title or pink clip for the 1937/39 trailer to
help establish it's identity. I'll ask the seller for that
information.
