The outlets of my holding tanks slip over the detachable part
of the Thetford dump valves. It's a fairly tight slip-fit that then
gets tightened with a big hose clamp.
When I tore all of this apart, I found that some type of gray putty
was also smeared around in the joint between the valves and
the tanks. The putty was still very pliable and could be Plumber's
Putty, but I'm not sure. Is it normal to have some goop in there, or
was it some type of attempt to stop a leak? If normal, what
material is this putty? I believe the tanks are made of PE.
The valves are PVC. I thought Plumber's Putty was for metal
joints only. I'd appreciate any insights.
