Suggest you tow it to the nearest competent garage and have them check
and pack the axle.  That's cheap insurance for a single axle and it
will give you a look at the Brakes.  If they are crumbling, as I
expect, you could negotiate a reduced price to put on the new pads (or
just pay for them yourself).
