Jim,
I'm presently involved in information gathering about
diesel engines in light trucks because I'm talking myself into retiring my
faithful Ford 460 gas guzzler in favor of a Cummins or Powerstroke.
Jim Dunnmyer recently made me aware of the Cummins website, www.cummins.com which is very
useful.
Briefly, the exhaust brake restricts escape of spent exhaust
gasses building up severe engine back pressure. I think exhaust brakes are
noisy because their design permits escape of some exhaust but not all.
