 I see a couple of problems with your proposals:

Just because an organization is "non profit" doesn't mean that
contributions to it are tax-deductable.

Working on a trailer at a rally is actually quite a bit more complicated
than building a house because there's more mechanical disiplines
involved. You need a LOT of tools, power equipment, perhaps welding
facilities, and lots and lots of miscellaneous parts. It wouldn't be too
practical to start into the repair of [whatever] and find out that you
need a little fritzgiget to complete the job. At home, it's simple to
post a question here to find that part (or simply call a dealer and have
it shipped), but it'll be quite impractical to do at a 3-day (or even
weeklong) rally.
