 That's one way, here's another:

Use your DVM to check the voltage output of the thermocouple. You should
get 15 millivolts or more when you heat the T/C with a propane torch or
even a cigarette lighter.

Everyone here should have a DVM (Digital Volt Meter); I much prefer the
kind that has a main function switch and is auto-ranging so you needn't
concern yourself with guessing what the appropiate range setting is.
