 I've seen a front hitch on a Dodge 4 X 4; he used it for a portable
winch as you described, plus I think he uses it for backing a trailer.
As you say, there's nothing like it to make spotting a trailer easy when
in a very tight spot.

FWIW: I never could back a 4-wheel wagon with anything but the front
hitch on a tractor. That's quite a rare talent, in my experience.
