The size is not an absolute number. It depends on the current and distance. For one 4 amp panel, 12 gauge wire can be up to 43 feet for a 5% loss in voltage. For two large panels (8 amps) 12 gauge should only be a max of 13 feet in length, however, 10 gauge will give you 36 feet with a 5% loss.
