There is no need to oversize the solar panel cord for protection from
excess current. There IS need to oversize the solar panel cord to reduce
the loss in the cable where there isn't a lot to start with. In most
solar panels (100 watts or less) there isn't enough current to be a
significant problem with heating 12 gauge. Oversizing is to minimize
voltage drop, larger sizes might be necessary with long runs.
