Pendulum style brake controllers are not that expensive.  Wal Mart even sells 
them and they work.  They also have the installation kit with instructions.  
Put one on ech vehicle, then you don;t have to worry which one is running 
when you want to travel.
You could probably get it home without much problems if you are experienced 
at trailer pulling.  If not, you need to wire up a controller correctly.  The 
brake light thing will probably do something to your electrical system in 
your tow vehicle.
