Each face (two faces, one inside and one outside) of an air conditioner
has an intake and an exhaust. Sometimes the inside and outside faces are
connected (fresh air mode) sometimes they are not. Especially in the
recirculate mode, each face takes an intake, changes its temperature and
exhausts it. The inside face takes in warm air, and spouts cooler air
while the outside face takes in warm and spouts hot air. If those
circulations are not separated, the inside face inhale the cooler air it
just exhausted, making it cooler but not so effective at removing warm
air from the conditioned space. If the outside face inhales its hot
exhaust air, it kills the efficiency of the refrigeration process so it
ALWAYS functions better if those outside face intake and exhaust streams
are separated. When you enclose the unit without any ducting to separate
the outside face's intake and exhaust streams you encourage the hot air
to be drawn into the unit. If you can extend a separator of intake and
exhaust air from the outside face of the unit to the outside of the
trailer and cause them to tend to be in opposite directions along the
outside surface of the trailer, you will improve the effectiveness and
efficiency of the air conditioner. Hence causing significantly greater
cooling per buck spent on electricity and on unit size. If you let the
hot exhaust air from the outside face be all sucked into the unit, you
may not be able to find a unit large enough to give adequate cooling in
Texas.
