I always try to carry six pieces if 2x6.  Some about 18" long and some a bit
shorter. Once upon a time I had some taperd ones as you describe.  They were
great but you may need a 2x6 uner it to raise it higher.  Usually only need
that many rarely but when y ou do it's best to be prepared.  My sizes are
for a single axle.
