The "lay" of aluminum - same as grain, is generally
horizontal except on the dome panels where the lay
should go the direction of the dome (up and over.)

On my 1960 tradewind, the first dome panels from the
bottom have a horizontal lay, the rest go up and over.

If you are polishing with a machine, unless you get a
drum polisher, you are pretty much ignoring the lay
period.  Not to worry - Rolite ap-300 does some
filling for you so once you are done, just clean up
and it should look fine.
