 Many folks carry a propane torch to light the water heater. Get one of
the self-lighting ones, point it into the pilot light area for a few
seconds, then turn the gas valve to "ON". The main burner will light
immediately because the thermocouple is already hot from the torch. It's
perfectly safe because the torch substitutes for the pilot light.
