[VAC] my first airstream

Hi Folks,

We are new to the AS chat room.  I have been reading the Q & A’s for the last two weeks and am impressed with all that knowledge out there so I though I would give my questions a try.  But first a little background.

My name is Gene Drew.  I am married with two kids age 3 & 4.  We live on South Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

We bought our first airstream 8 weeks ago.  It took a long time to find one in our price range and I think it was worth the wait.  It’s a 24ft 1960 Tradewind that we got off the son of the original owner.  The overall condition is quite good and the interior is original except for the toilet and mattress cover on the center bed.  The problem I would like to fix is the rust in the frame at the back near the bumper on the door side.  About 70% of the steel is gone.  My Questions are…

1)      Should I remove the whole pan to confirm the condition of the rest of the frame?

2)      If the frame needs a major overhaul how do I support the trailer while the frame is off?

3)      Can I put the pan back on so the rivets look the same as it was before I took the pan off?

4)      Is there a book that will walk me through the process step by step?

If I do the job I will have to do most of it myself as we don’t have the $$$ to pay someone to do it for us.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Gene
