     Electric trailer brakes probably were not standard, but probably were 
available as an extra cost option, on your 1957 Bubble due to its light 
weight.  I base this on the 1953 Airstream sales folder description for the 
15 foot Cruisette.  At 1420 or 1425 pounds, the Cruisette did not come with 
electrical trailer brakes as standard equipment, which were not required by 
state or national laws.  But Warner Electric Brakes with a hand control could 
be fitted at an additional cost of $80.00.   I imagine the same situation 
applied to your 1957 Bubble. 

    My 1956 22 foot A/S has electric brakes, so they were used in the 1950's 
and probably earlier.  Today in Colorado, trailers less than a certain weight 
are not required to have service brakes on the axle, but I don't know the 
cutoff weight without looking it up.
