Just a note of caution,  Just redid the doors and drawers of the 58
'Bubble' which had whitewashed or limned ash.  Someone had done a fairly
bad strip and refinish job in the past that left quite a bit of the
white on.  It was neither stripped nor original, so I used paint remover
to get the varnish and old stain off.  There were places where the old
white finish wouldn't come off with remover so I had to sand fairly
heavily.  The point of this missive is that, in a couple of spots the
sander started to go through the top ash veneer.  Not something I was
happy about.  I have refinished countless antiques, some down to the
original finish so that, even the Antiques Roadshow wouldn't know. 
Maybe the late '50's ash veneer is thinner than the birch, but I've yet
to sand through a birch layer. Go gently and maybe you won't let loose
the string of expletives I gave out last month.
