Mary and Evan,

Your dim lights can be caused by poor connections at the junction of the
wire and fixture. Check and see if you have aluminum wiring. You don't need
to replace the wiring, it's ok. The problem is the connection points. They
build up corrosion because of the dissimilar metals coming together.

Get some corrosion protection grease at you local electrical supply. Clean
and coat the connections. I would also replace all the 120v receptacles
with aluminum wiring compatible ones. The old receptacles can get very hot
when they are supplying high wattage devices.
