RE: [SilverStreak] Re: Silver Streak Digest V1 #577 Help with getting new tires

I am not sure of what the situation is in the original posters area,
but there are several truck tire dealers that will work on locking
rims in my area, southern central valley in California, as a number of
the older farm trailers around here still have locking rims. Yes they
do use a cage to mount and dismount the tires on the rim. As far as
tubes go, you can use tubes on ANY tire, there are adapters that fit
in hole for the valve stem to allow the newer thin valve stems on some
tubes to be used in any type of rim. My tire guy says he can special
order tubeless valve stems for the split rims, but does not recommend
it as the split rims usually leak if run without a tube.

If it were me, I would change out the rims, but I don't know how much
money the original poster wants to spend at this time. When on the
road with locking rims, there will be a problem with getting a flat
fixed on the trailer.

I personally don't like the look of the white spoke wheels by Jackman
or Carlsile and would upgrade to something that looks a bit better on
a Silver Streak, but the $35 rims could be used. I believe some of
the six lug rims have the same bolt pattern as an older 1/2 ton chevy
pickup. It would be best to take a tire and rim in to the dealer when
ordering new rims, to make sure you get the right bolt spacing.

Uh Ralph,

Bad advice there ....

'Split rims' are a misnomer for locking rims and hardly any
tire dealers work on them anymore because of the liability.

There has to be a cage to change them in for starters .....
Not to mention the tires are a 'tubed' type and you have to
change the tubes with the tires.

The hole for the tube does not accept a standard valve stem
and cannot be used with a tubeless tire.

The only reason to keep a locking rim would be for authenticity
in a much older vintage coach or travel trailer for the
purpose of concourse or show judging.

Locking rims are not practical and offer no practical advantage.

A Carlisle six inch 6 x 5.5 white spoke wheel is about $35 at Discount
Tire.
