Re: [SilverStreak] Axle for 1971 ss. Help!!

It will go all the way. Just tell him to adjust any slack out of the
chaining if any and come on with it. I towed from mile post 100 on two of
four wheels. Just take his time. Go just 55 mph and keep steady. He will be
home in 6 hours or less. Load any weight on the front area. Make sure all
holding tanks are empty. It is very cold. The tires will run cool. Stop at
rest stops and feel the tires and hubs for warmth or heat. Other alternative
is find a storage place that is fenced and secure. Put the trailer there and
then order the proper axle. Cutting the axle requires too much risk too
specialized welding and pre-heating to avoid catastrophic fracture failure.
It is not worth risk vs. cost vs. wait. Storage should not be more than $2
per day and maybe only a $1 per day. I'd get Jim's measurements 'cause that
old axle is extremely strong and the 58 should be the same. Let us know
because there are a lot of folks like me who really do care and just wish
could be there to help. What is the destination city?
