I noticed a similar problem just recently. I had replaced the water
inlet and moved it to a position above the bumper locker and about a
foot below the curb side tail light. Seemed like a good idea--easy to
get to and easy to plumb to the rest of the system inside the rear
compartment. But when I was doing my axle job and took down the belly
pan, I noticed that the last inch or two of floor was delaminating.
Then I noticed that the strip of aluminum that the bumper locker lid is
riveted to extends forward under the aft inch or two of floor. So when
water gets on this strip, it wicks forward and wets the flooring.

If the hose connection to my new water inlet leaks even a little, the
water drips down on the strip and keeps the floor wet for as long as I
am hooked up.* Ouch!!*

*It would be a good idea to put a thin line of Vulchem between the shell
and that strip of aluminum to prevent water damage to the aft two inches
of flooring plywood--rain will do the same thing.*
