I've got the original out of my '72 Overlander--rectangular, 4-wire, but 
I think it's got a lever on the bottom edge, not a wheel or gears. If I 
was home this week I'd describe it better.

I'm pretty sure you can use a standard thermostat, like a new digital 
one--they all have the same connections (except maybe the option to have 
the fan run continuously or only whent he compressor is on).
