    I like where you're going with the spring idea.

    Say, would a short length of 1/8" Dacron (available in 50 foot skeins at
West Marine) drawn across near the bottom of the drapes and tied off at both
ends to cleats or a couple of screws do the job OK?  The beauty there is
that when the line is taken off and the cleats or screws are covered up by
the relaxed drapes, everything will be hidden from view.
