Of all the possibilities, closing the air slots seems to be my first option.  
Does messing with the large slot screw on the body of the thermostat regulate 
the burner gas output?  Mine is a Unitrol with that slot screw at about 2:30 
o'clock relative to the large red temp adjuster knob.
