I may get some dissention, but I believe Daisy is right on.  After getting
my '60 Safari I took my heater apart and tried to clean and repair it.
Luckily I couldn't get it to work right and finally took it to a repairman.
Found out it had actually been recalled years earlier after several blew up.
I know many of us like to keep our units as original as possible, but I
personally believe that the heater as well as the hot water heater should be
replaced for safety.  Upgrading also allows the addition of electronic
ignition which eliminates the pilot light.  No more wasted fuel and open
flames in the coach!
