There are some additives that claim to improve valve lubrication. Pre 
war engines had to handle unleaded gas and did.

Unless the vintage engine is worked really hard and long, valve seat 
wear may prove to be acceptable, and if done during a general rebuild 
change valves and valve seats need not be so much of an expense.

However the lack of lead in today's gas does cut way back on spark plug 
fouling.
