Back in 1989 I traveled from CO to Napa CA over route 50.  It was then 2 lane 
and called the lonliest highway for a reason.  At one point we almost ran out 
of gas between sparse towns located far apart.  It also took us over 12,000 ' 
 elevation Monarch pass that almost ruined the engine on our International 
Travelall that was rated to tow 10,000 lbs.  I would not recomend it unless it 
has greatly changed since then.
