Is your old unit dead in the water?  Does the fan blow, but it doesn't make
cold air?  An old Indian trick is to have someone turn the thing on at the
same instant someone else gives the compressor a smart smack with a rubber
mallet...more than one reluctant cooler has been resurrected that way.

Hope it works for you, it did for me on my '78 Revcon's rear AC.  The cover
bolts on the front one are frozen solid, so I haven't tried it yet, but
Summer's darn near here and it's gonna be time to get it going real soon!
