Re: [VAL] Re:Battery boiling, Help !

Tom,

Is your converter a Univolt? Is it 'original'?

This sounds like a case of an older converter that runs full blast whenever
it's plugged in via the trailer's power cord.

You may want to consider a newer style converter that will not let this
situation happen again. There are converters (converters change 110 vac to
12 vdc for our purposes) out there that you can purchase for a reasonable
price such as the Inteli-Charger I believe it's called. There is also a
device that sometimes comes with this newer type of converter that will keep
your battery charged at all times so you can leave it plugged in - all the
time if you desire.

To have an even better battery situation you could invest in an all glass
mat battery such as the Optima -- it can be mounted in any position as it
has NO electrolyte to worry about and it will never boil. The electrolyte
is contained in glass mats and there is a tiny vent on the top of the
battery. These Optima batteries are the Blue colored ones I'm referring to.

I have 2 of these Optima batteries installed in our newer Airstream and they
have an over the counter guarantee of an even swap for 3 years with no
pro-rating if they ever fail. After that 3 year period they'd be pro-rated
but I doubt that will ever be needed, they are that good. Cost for me was
about $150.00 per battery -- not cheap but when you consider replacing a
couple of Sears Die-Hard RV batteries after they boil over and over-charge a
couple of times you'd spend more money and STILL not have the 3 year
guarantee Optima will give you.

You were right to unplug this unit. I'm afraid you need a new converter
that will vary the charge that your battery needs from time to time. Check
out the units and battery I've just told you about.
